Understanding ways to fund care.

Care funding can feel complex. These plain-English starting points can help you prepare better questions.

General information only. This page is not personalised financial advice and does not guarantee eligibility. Check current rules with the relevant public body or an independent adviser.

Privately funded home care

You can arrange and pay for care directly. Ask for a written explanation of fees, minimum visit lengths, review arrangements, notice terms and any different charges.

Local authority assessments

A local authority can assess eligible care and support needs and may also complete a financial assessment. Outcomes depend on current rules and individual circumstances.

Personal budgets and direct payments

Where eligible, a personal budget sets out funding allocated to meet assessed needs. Direct payments may offer more control over arranging support.

NHS Continuing Healthcare

Some adults with a primary health need may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare after assessment. Eligibility is not based on a diagnosis alone.

Funded Nursing Care

Where relevant, NHS-funded Nursing Care may contribute toward registered nursing care in a nursing home; it does not normally fund domiciliary home care.

Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance may help some people over State Pension age with extra costs related to disability or health needs. Eligibility must be checked with the official service.

Carer’s Allowance

Some unpaid carers may qualify depending on caring hours, earnings, education and the benefits received by the person they support.

How care costs may be calculated

Costs may reflect visit length, frequency, time of day, weekends or bank holidays, number and skills of care professionals, travel, overnight arrangements and the complexity of support. Ask for a written quotation and what happens if needs change.

Questions before agreeing care

  • What is included in the stated fee?
  • Are there minimum visit lengths or different time-based charges?
  • How are cancellations, reviews and changes handled?
  • Who should be contacted about invoices or funding?
  • Where can independent financial advice be obtained?

Independent information may be available through Leeds City Council, NHS services, GOV.UK, Citizens Advice or a suitably regulated financial adviser. Always verify current information directly.
